What is ACZAR Page 3
------------- --------
ACZAR is a program that helps manage files that are in
compressed (compacted) format or helps manage files by
compressing them easily. Besides these main features, it
offers a wide variety of helpful additions such as general
file and disk management functions. In addition, ACZAR
supports all switches for McAfee's virus scanner program
SCAN.EXE.
ACZAR is NOT freeware nor public domain. ACZAR is shareware.
ACZAR is copyrighted. CZAR Software retains ownership of that
copyright. Anyone who continues to use ACZAR after a trial
period of 30 days is obligated to purchase ACZAR by paying a
small registration fee (please read the registration form on
page ??). If you would like to read more about shareware
software, please read page ??, "What is shareware, and how
does it work."
==============================================================
What are compressed files, and why would you use them? Page 4
----------------------------------------------------- --------
Nowadays, many computer software programs and data files are
very large. Much disk space is required to store these big
files on hard drives or floppy disks. In addition, big files
need more time to transfer electronically from computer to
computer.
To somehow store these big files in reduced or compacted form
would save disk space, time, and money. That is why there are
several good compression and decompression programs such as
PKZIP, LHA, ARJ etc. These programs work under mathematical
compression algorithms that allow them to reduce the size of
a computer program or data file to a fraction of the original
size. Once these large computer programs are compressed,
they can be transferred, for example, to electronic bulletin
board systems. To use the computer programs and its data
files, compressed files have to be decompressed and returned
to their original sizes.
Moreover, compression is a convenient way to store files in
compressed form on floppy disks. Otherwise, these big files
would take precious disk space.
Unfortunately, all the compression and decompression programs
are difficult to use because they are command line driven.
This is why CZAR Software built ACZAR, to help manage these
compression and decompression programs and more. You can use
ACZAR as a DOS Shell to manipulate files and directories, or
you can use ACZAR's ability to take advantage of each switch
in McAfee's virus scanner program SCAN.EXE.

Why ACZAR Page 5
--------- --------
After trying to use existing archive shell utilities, none of
them could satisfy me. They were difficult to use. They
offered plenty of features, but they still missed important
functions. In many instances they were very cumbersome to
use.
I was trying to locate other archive shells that would be
easy to use but powerful in function. I did not find such an
archive shell in either the United States or in Europe.
Then the idea came to develop an archive shell on my own.
The archive shell should be easy to use but still powerful
in function.
I thought this would not be so difficult to accomplish.
First, it seemed easy to do, but it was not. To develop a
good software program takes time and a lot of patience.
Most importantly, feedback from users who can provide tips
on what they would like to have that other programs are
lacking is worth its weight in gold.
These are the nineties. I wanted a program that had all the
new features that good programming languages can offer such
as SAA interface, pull down menus, dialogue boxes, context
sensitive help and more. By the way, ACZAR was developed
and programmed with Microsoft's Professional Development
System BASIC 7.10. These features can help you in producing
a program that is easy to use. Of course, the heart of a
computer software program is and should be its features and
functions.
After more than 1 1/2 years, more than 22,000 lines of source
code, hundreds of sometimes frustrating hours, researching,
developing, programming, and testing, you are now able to
try out ACZAR. I hope ACZAR can help you to manage archive
files in easy but powerful ways like it finally does it for
me. Please, let me know what you like or dislike about ACZAR,
so I can improve it even more.

Features Page 6
-------- --------
o Ease of use - The biggest concern for CZAR Software
was that ACZAR should be very easy to
use but extremely powerful in
function. ACZAR IS easy to use and
powerful at the same time. Try it!
o Fully mouse driven - Users can fully operate ACZAR with a
mouse without ever using the keyboard.
Users without a mouse can use hot-keys
or cursor keys for speedy operations.
o All major archives - All major archive files are supported
supported such as ZIP, LZH, PAK, ARC, ARJ, and
ZOO.
o Built-in Viewer - This powerful high-speed file viewer,
CLIST, allows you to view files
quickly. There is no need to use any
external programs such as LIST. In
fact, CZAR SOFTWARE's own file viewer
CLIST is faster in displaying the file
on screen than LIST.COM. CLIST
displays even very fast on XT's.
CLIST is also fully mouse operational.
o EMS Memory Support - ACZAR supports expanded memory LIM/EMS
v4.00 and higher. Using expanded
memory improves performance of most
functions within ACZAR.
o Help-System - ACZAR features built-in, context
sensitive help which allows you to get
extensive help with a touch of a
button (F1). Short, descriptive help
text lines are always displayed on
bottom screen line. There is no need
to read a manual.
o 43/50 Line display - Use 43/50 line option to display the
maximum information on your monitor
is inclusive within archive and
viewing files.
o Scan for viruses - Scan all files for viruses with
SCAN.EXE. Scan within archives before
you even decompress them or simply
scan normal files. ACZAR fully
supports McAfee's SCAN program. Use
every switch SCAN offers.
o Extensive Switches - For the beginner, there is no need to
set even one switch to successfully
manage archives. Just use the default
settings. For the "power-user", get
almost everything out of each archive
or virus scanner. There are extensive
switch settings available for each
archive.
o Automatically - Unlike other archive shells, ACZAR
locates archives searches all drives and directories
automatically. There is no need to
hassle with putting all files in the
DOS PATH etc. ACZAR knows where to
get all the necessary archive files
and how to use them wherever they
are located. No need to change your
AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files.
o SAA Interface - Uses state of the art pull down menus,
radio-buttons, push-buttons,
list-boxes, list-windows, 3-dim
exploding windows with real shadows,
and much more.
o File and Disk - ACZAR has complete file and disk
Management management systems built in. For
example, copy, delete, move, rename,
view, date change, time change,
attribute change, text search, locate
files and much more.
o Not crippled - ACZAR is not crippled (features
removed, or demo like) in any way.
CZAR Software believes in the users
and the shareware concept - Try before
you buy.
...and much more

Quick Start Page 8
----------- --------
Assuming you would like to install ACZAR in C:\ACZAR:
- Change to the directory were ACZAR should be installed.
If the directory does not exist, create it. For example,
(assuming you are on drive C:):
CD\
MD C:\ACZAR
CD C:\ACZAR
- Copy all files into the ACZAR directory. For example,
(assuming you are copying all files from floppy drive A:):
COPY A:\*.*
- All necessary files should be in directory C:\ACZAR by now
- Run ACZAR by typing ACZAR followed by the ENTER key
- ACZAR will run an initial setup procedure, so follow the
commands on screen
NOTE: If you ran ACZAR before installing it, delete the
file ACZAR.DAT if it exists. For example, if you
ran ACZAR on a floppy disk or from a temporarily
directory, ACZAR saves internal information in
ACZAR.DAT about the directory in which it was first
run. After you delete the ACZAR.DAT files, copy the
files into the directory you wish to use and run ACZAR
again. Read section "The ACZAR.DAT File" for more
information.
==============================================================
Environment Variable and PATH Setup Page 8
----------------------------------- --------
The following setup procedures are required ONLY if you want
to start ACZAR from anywhere on your hard drive.
If you do not choose to setup an environment variable and the
PATH statement, you will need to change to the ACZAR
directory and start ACZAR from there. For example,
assume you are in the root directory C:\, and you
installed ACZAR in C:\ACZAR. Without the environment variable
and PATH setup, you need to change to C:\ACZAR by typing
CD C:\ACZAR at the DOS prompt. Now you can type ACZAR and
start-up ACZAR.
To setup the PATH statement and the environment variable in
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (this file is mostly in C:\), do the
following:
- Use your favorite text editor, word processor, or MS-DOS
5.0 EDIT.COM in order to setup that environment variable.
Enter the following line into your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (the
AUTOEXEC.BAT is located in your root directory C:\):
SET ACZAR=PATH
Where PATH is the directory where all ACZAR files are
located. For example:
SET ACZAR=C:\ACZAR
- To setup the PATH statement, enter the following:
PATH=C:\ACZAR
Note: If you already see a PATH statement, just append the
following text to your existing path.
For example,
PATH=C:\;C:\DOS\;C:\ACZAR\
- Save the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and exit your editor
- Reboot your computer system by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL at the
same time in order to take advantage of the new created
environment variable. Every time you type in ACZAR followed
by the ENTER key from anywhere on your hard drive, ACZAR
will be started and able to locate all necessary files.
==============================================================
General Mouse and Keyboard Operation Page 9
------------------------------------ --------
ACZAR is fully mouse operational. That means, if you have a
Microsoft Mouse or 100% compatible, you can operate ACZAR
without ever touching the keyboard.
However, if you do not have a mouse, you can still access
functions very quickly by using hot-keys and short-cut-keys.
Use the "Hot-keys and Short-Cut-Keys Chart" at the end of
this documentation for convenient use.
With the mouse, pushing the left mouse button while the
mouse cursor is over a dialogue item or any other menu item,
will activate a specific function. Throughout the documen-
tation, we will refer to this operation as "clicking" over
specific dialogue items.
The keyboard TAB key moves to the next menu or dialogue item
while pressing SHIFT+TAB will move backward. Pressing the
SPACE bar or ENTER will activate or check a dialogue item or
operation. Pressing ESC always escapes and returns to the
previous operation.
Throughout the program, you will see dialogue items like:

File Handling Page 12
-------------- --------
Within the File Handling window you are able to perform the
most important tasks of ACZAR and more.
Here you can view, delete, copy, move, rename, compress, and
decompress files, access the file- and disk management,
scan for viruses, run other programs, get specific infor-
mation about files and disk drives, and much more.
The File Handling window is divided into two major
parts. The upper part is normally used for the source path,
and the lower part is normally used for the target path.
Although it does not matter if you use the upper part of the
screen for your source path and the lower part of the screen
for the target path or vice versa, it is a good idea to keep
to the "natural" top-down perspective to minimize confusion.
Operations performed with source path functions are totally
independent from target path functions and vice versa. This
allows more freedom for specific functions such as file
deletion, copying, moving etc.
Some functions will place a file into the opposite window.
For example, if you decompress a file in the Source Path,
the decompressed files will be placed in the Target Path,
or if you copy a file from the Target Path to the Source
Path.
TIP: If you use the keyboard, try to use the Ctrl-PageUp
or Ctrl-PageDown key combinations. This will quickly
jump from the lower part of the screen (Target Path)
to the upper part of the screen (Source Path) or
vice versa.

With the source-path-directory-window, you can change the
drive and path of your source directory.
To change the drive/path, move the light-bar with the
UP-ARROW up or with the DOWN-ARROW down and press ENTER. With
a mouse, point the mouse cursor on the drive letter or the
directory name and click the left mouse button.
You can scroll through the drive and path names using the
UP-ARROW, DOWN-ARROW, PAGE-UP, PAGE-DOWN, HOME, and END keys.
With a mouse, point the mouse cursor on the right side of the
source-path-directory-window. You can point on either the
up-arrow, down-arrow, or in between the scroll bar. If there
are less than 7 drives or directories, there will be no
scroll bar.
TIP: If you are using a mouse and would like to scroll
through the window without much aiming on the up-arrow
or down-arrow of the scroll bar, use the top or bottom
window line. This allows speedy operation with the
mouse.
To jump directly to the source-path-directory-window, press
< 1 >.
The same functions apply for the target-path-directory-window
at the bottom of the screen except that the hot-key is < 3 >.

Source Path Wildcard
With the source-path-input-field you can change the drive and
path of your source directory manually.
To change the source path, type-in a valid drive/path AND
wildcards. Then, press ENTER to set the new source path.
Do not forget to enter a file specification after the path.
For example, C:\TELEMATE\DOWNLOAD\*.* would display all files
in that directory, C:\TELEMATE\DOWNLOAD\*.ZIP would display
only the files that have a ZIP file extension.
In the source-path-input-field, the one letter hot
keys do not work. For example, pressing < D > for Decompress
would not work because ACZAR would expect it to be a simple
letter to enter a source path.
You can also enter a directory that does not exist. ACZAR
will prompt you to create the new directory.

Appendix C. Command Line Switches Page 34
--------------------------------- --------
You can start ACZAR with additional command line switches.
These command line switches offer additional functions that
are normally not necessary.
Command line switches are used when you type ACZAR at the
DOS prompt.
FORMAT:
ACZAR /SWITCH
The following switches are available:
/NETWORK or /N = Networks.
The Network switch should be used if
ACZAR is not able to detect drives
higher than drive C: in default mode.
/S = Omit default source directory.
By default ACZAR saves the source path
in File Handling mode. When you start
ACZAR again, it will read the last active
directories.
The /S switch turns this off, and ACZAR
will read ALL files in the current
directory. Examples:
/S - would display all files
in the current directory
/S*.EXE - would display all .EXE
files in the current
directory
/SC:\TELIX\DOWNLOAD
- would display all files in
directory C:\TELIX\DOWNLOAD
/SC:\TELIX\DOWNLOAD\*.ZIP
- would display all .ZIP
files in directory
C:\TELIX\DOWNLOAD
/T = Omit default target directory.
By default ACZAR saves the target path
in File Handling mode. When you start
ACZAR again, it will read the last active
directories.
The /T switch turns this off, and ACZAR
will read ALL files in the current
directory. Examples:
/T - would display all files in
the current directory
/T*.* - would display all files in
the current directory
/TC:\ACZAR\DECOMPRE
- would display all files in
directory C:\ACZAR\DECOMPRE
/TC:\ACZAR\DECOMPRE\*.DOC
- would display all .DOC
files in directory
C:\ACZAR\DECOMPRE

Appendix E. 10 Good Reasons Why You Should Register Page 37
--------------------------------------------------- --------
1. It's The Right Thing To Do.
2. You'll get all kinds of Neat Stuff, like a printed
manual, the latest version of the program, notice of
future updates, and the Slim Whitman albums if you order
now.
3. Your mother would want you to.
4. If you don't, the Software Police will come to your home
and drag you off in irons for operating unregistered
software, forever disgracing you in the eyes of your
family, friends, and neighbors.
5. The next time you're at a party and some drunken
loudmouth says, "My wife is better looking than yours,"
my car cost more than yours, my kids are smarter than
yours, my dog is meaner than yours, my lawn is greener
than yours, and I can kick your butt," you can come
BACK with, "Oh yeah, well I register my shareware and"
You don't!" This will give you a superior feeling that
money can't buy and will no doubt make him slink away
in shame.
6. There are cosmic principles of kamma, dhamma, and dootin
involved, which are much too profound to go into here;
let's just say you're going to feel awfully stupid a few
years down the road when your right leg dries up and
drops off, all because you were too cheap to send in the
ten bucks for the arcade game you got for your kids.
7. Shareware registration is the only way to pull this
country out of the recession it has slipped into; or at
least It's as good a way as any of the others being
tossed around by various political candidates.
8. It gives you a good feeling inside, similar to the one
you get from the ingestion of massive quantities of
fermented malt beverages, only without the concomitant
brain-cell mortality, and you don't throw up on your
shoes.
9. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of struggling
shareware authors out there, and all of their mothers
would want you to.
10. Shareware authors are sincere, hardworking, dedicated
professionals who deserve to be rewarded for their
efforts, so that they don't get discouraged and turn
to a life of crime, which will add to the already
epidemic crime problem, overburden law-enforcement
officials, increase taxes, bog down the courts,
overcrowded correctional facilities, and require
construction of new penitentiaries, which will have to
be built in your backyard, over there behind the gas
barbecue where you were planning on putting the spa
someday when you saved enough money, which you planned
on doing by not registering your shareware.

Appendix H. What is shareware and how does it work Page 41
-------------------------------------------------- --------
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
differ on details -- some request registration while others
require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to
continue using the software to an updated program with
printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial
software, and the copyright holder retains all rights, with
a few specific exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors
are accomplished programmers, just like commercial authors,
and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases,
there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference
is in the method of distribution. The author specifically
grants the right to copy and distribute the software,
either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For
example, some authors require written permission before a
commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software.
You should find software that suits your needs and
pocketbook, whether it's commercial or Shareware. The
Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because
you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is
low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate
money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you
don't pay for it.

Appendix I. Future plans about ACZAR Page 42
------------------------------------ --------
There might be a graphical ACZAR version running under MS-DOS
without the need for Windows 3.1. This would require an EGA
or VGA card, though. It would be the second version of the
"three" ACZAR's.
In addition, there are plans to come-out with a Windows 3.1
version of ACZAR. The Windows version should be fully
compatible with the DOS version. It would be the third
version of the "three" ACZAR's.
It is unlikely that there will be a 16 bit or 32 bit OS/2 2.0
version of ACZAR in the near future because of the HPFS
problems in version 2.0.
==============================================================
Appendix J. Credits and Thanks Page 43
------------------------------ --------
I would like to thank the following people who were involved
in testing and helping me developing ACZAR:
Jesse Moore, Moore Enterprises, P.O. Box 370804, El Paso, TX
79937, phone: (915) 855-0365, who gave me lots if input and
help. Thanks Jesse.
My brother Bernd who did lots of testing and suggestions.
Lawrence E. Milbourn, Ph.D., El Paso, TX, Technical Writer
Instructor, Division of English who edited and revised the
ACZAR documentation
Juan Hernandez, El Paso, TX, who did extensive testing under
Windows 3.1.
James Sweet, El Paso, TX, for testing and suggestions.
Mark Finocchio, El Paso, TX.
Norm Bates, El Paso, TX.
Dick Dennison, New Hampton, NY, who provided much help in
viewing archive files and self-extracting files with
Microsoft QuickBASIC. His BBS number in New York is
(914) 374-3903. Call his BBS to get the newest shareware
and public-domain files about QuickBASIC.
Also, I would like to thank all the system operators
(SYSOP's) and companies who allowed me to mention their
BBS phone numbers and names in this documentation file.
You are able to download free the newest releases of ACZAR
on their BBS's (more on page XX). Call them today!
And all others who helped in making ACZAR a great program.

Warranty Disclaimer Page 44
------------------- --------
Users of ACZAR must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
"ACZAR is supplied as is. The author disclaims all
warranties, expressed or implied, including, without
limitation, the warranties of merchantability and of fitness
for any purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages,
direct or consequential, which may result from the use of
ACZAR."
ACZAR is a "shareware program" and is provided at no
charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it
with your friends, but please do not give it away altered
or as part of another system. The essence of
"user-supported" software is to provide personal computer
users with quality software without high prices, and yet
to provide incentive for programmers to continue to
develop new products. If you find this program useful and
find that you are using ACZAR and continue to use
ACZAR after a reasonable trial period, you must make
a registration payment of $39.50 to CZAR Software. The
$39.50 registration fee will license one copy for use on any
one computer at any one time. You must treat this software
just like a book. An example is that this software may be
used by any number of people and may be freely moved from
one computer location to another, as long as there is no
possibility of it being used at one location while it is
being used at another, just as a book cannot be read at
the same time by two different persons at two locations.
Commercial users of ACZAR must register and pay for
their copies of ACZAR within 30 days of first use or
their license is withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may
be made by contacting CZAR Software.
Anyone distributing ACZAR for any kind of remuneration
must first contact CZAR Software at the address below for
authorization. This authorization will be automatically
granted to distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering
to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and such
distributors may begin offering ACZAR immediately
(However CZAR Software must still be advised so that the
distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest version
of ACZAR.).
You are encouraged to pass a copy of ACZAR along to your
friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register
their copy if they find that they can use it. All
registered users will receive a copy of the latest version
of the ACZAR system.

out of or related to this agreement shall be brought only in
